Friday Night Lights(Game report from Crocs game on 18th of May)

The Oslo Vikings controlled the visiting Crocodiles from Seinajoki, Finland 16 – 0. The opening kickoff came at 19:00 Friday which is unusual as most games are played on either Saturday or Sunday afternoons. “I really enjoy night games,” said head coach Val Gunn. “It is something different for most of the players and it reminds me of high school games played in the USA.”

The Seinäjoen Crocodiles presented yet another difficult challenge in the schedule for the Oslo Vikings this season. In 2006 the team finished 11-1 in the Maple League, the highest level of American Football competition in the country. Their only loss came against eventual league champions Porvoon Butchers in the semi-finals, a team the Crocodiles had beaten twice in the regular season. “For us [Vikings] it is very important that we play these types of games. Really it comes down to two reasons for making such a challenging schedule. First, we play in a small top league and must go outside of Norway to find quality games and second because we feel that by playing such tough opponents that it will better prepare us for the Norwegian Championship game against the Eidsvoll 1814s on July 7.” Val Gunn said in post-game comments.

Both teams were not at full-strength, as it was the opening game of the year for the Seinäjoen Crocodiles and the Oslo Vikings were without several key players who were injured in the EFAF Cup game versus the Amsterdam Crusaders that was played a week earlier. Still the result was never in doubt for the #13 ranked Vikings who dominated play from the start. With star running backs Javon Bailey and Nicolay Asalaken out, Oslo used the opportunity to open up the passing game and QB Ted Baynham had his most productive game of the season. WR Eirik Jerven had a breakout game with six catches and a touchdown reception.

The defense for the Oslo Vikings once again continued to be a menacing force on the football field as the Crocodiles never threatened to score during the game. For most of the 2007 season the defense of the Vikings has been extremely tough. “Right now there is a high level of confidence for the guys on that side of the ball. Our defense has kept us in every game we have played this year and I really hope they can keep this level of intensity throughout the rest of the season.” Coach Gunn said in praise of the Oslo Vikings defense.

Pictures from the game will be posted later.
