Summary 2009 season
Summary 2009 season
Going into NOAFF Championship game against the Eidsvoll 1814s, the Oslo Vikings come in with a 6-4 record on the season. It has been an up and down season in terms of results for the Vikings, but it has been a successful season with the adversity that this team has overcome. The team has adjusted to having many new faces on the playing field and having guys move positions to stay competitive week after week. The Vikings have lost 11 starters during the season yet have found a way to move forward.
The season started in March when Americans Reed Gottula (QB), Chris Katzmark (WR/DB) and Jesse Alderfer (WR/DB) were brought over as imports. Their collective impact was felt on the very first practice when players at their respective positions groups were taught necessary skills and techniques to play this season and have done so with great success.
April 4th was the first game against the Hvidøvre All-Stars and saw the Vikings defeat the Danish squad 28-16. Marlon Pacil started the season off right for the defense when he intercepted the first pass against the Stars. Gottula would find Eirik Jerven (WR) for two touchdowns in this contest.
After Easter break, the VIkings traveled to Stockholm to face the defending Super series champs the Stockholm Mean Machine. After falling behind 22-7 at half the Vikings stormed back behind the Gottula to Katzmark combination and won the game 28-22. The defense stepped up and shut out the Mean Machine in the second half.
Game 3 of the season came in defeat as the Vikings dropped A 52-41 barn burner to the Eidsvoll 1814s. It was a back and forth game that could have gone either way.
The beginning of May came as the Oslo group travled a total of 30 hours by bus to Amsterdam to face the Crusaders in EFAF Group play. The Crusaders won the nail biter 10-6 in a game that every Viking played their hearts out.
May 9th saw a 20 man squad travel to Krisitansand and defeat the Gladiators 33-0. Highlights of the game include interceptions by Mehemt Sezer, Eirik Jerven, and Lars Tonsberg whom are all normally offensive players.
May 16th was not a good day for the Vikings as the Farnham Knights defeated the home Vikings 41-28 in EFAF Group play. The Vikings led 21-20 at half but could not hold on. Jesse Alderfer scored 2 touchdowns in the game but it was not enough to snatch victory.
A rivalry game with the Vålrenga Trolls was a not much if a game as the Vikings won 39-6. WR Erik Nøtvedt recorded his first touchdown on the season in this walk over.
May 30th was not kind to the Vikings as they dropped a 60-33 decisions to the Eidsvoll 1814s. The Vikings led 21-20 at half but were unable to stop the 1814 rushing attack.
After a much needed bye week the Vikings returned to action June 13th and defeated the Nidaros Domers 27-6 behind a stellar effort from DL Chrisitan Paulsboe. Paulsboe had 2 TD's on the day, 1 as a FB, and the other on a fumble recovery for the TD.
The NOAFF Semi-Finals was a repeat performance of the week before. The Domers came in ready to play and stayed with the VIkings early before Chris Katzmark and Eirik Jerven scored 2 touchdowns apiece. Jesse Alderfer and Andre Engdahl each had a touchdown in the game.
This season has seen the Vikings average over 30 points a game on offense up from last season's 17 points a game effort. This improvement is being made with 4 offensive linemen that had not taken a senior team snap until this season. Their determination and dedication has shown with great progression throughout the year. The defense is allowing almost 6 points less a game and is having outstanding performances from Patrick Gjertsen (LB), Christian Paulsboe (DL), and Lorenzo Proctor (DB). Every player has stepped his game up a notch from last season and that is because they are taking to the coaching by not only the 3 Americans but also DL coach Henrick Dahl, LB coach FInn Jarle Mathisen, and DB coach Garry Fraser. Alex Moe has come back form playing college ball to help coach the OL these last few weeks and the improvement shows.
